It’s particularly hard for musicians at the moment. Lockdown has really impacted their ability to teach, collaborate and perform, and currently, the internet doesn’t offer much in the way of real-time musical apps and websites to help.

The inspiration originally came soon after the lockdown started when seeing musician having to struggle with their laptops carefully angled towards their instrument, or phones precariously balanced on a table while they conduct lessons or collaborations via a video/audio conference call. Then there are the audio problems…

For the past couple of months we have seen a spike in demand for a product like ours. Lessons and collaboration has moved online, and as well as this we have noticed an increase in individuals using their free time to learn a new skills, like a musical instrument.

Why is it better for musicians?

One of the real joys of performed music is the connection to the present moment it brings, for the performers and listeners a-like. The is one of the reasons why, in the age of technology and pre-recorded music, learning an instrument is still so sought-after and admired. However this feeling of connection is somewhat lost when performing across convensional video conferencing applications.

CloudPiano aims to make musicians feel more connected when performing remotely by addressing these problems directly. Our data-based streaming of musical content brings a number of advantages over audio: it’s quicker, and the data can easily be visualised in a number of helpful ways.
